Money Wasted on Takeaway Last YearJanuary 27, 2019 • Personal
This is such an embarrassing blog post to write, but I feel like I need to get it out into the world in order to make a change. I want to hold myself accountable, and what better way to do that than to shame myself on the Internet? So, here it goes…
I am fairly addicted to ordering food online to be delivered to my house. I have accounts on Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats. Occasionally I order the odd Dominos or Pizza Hut.
Katy always tells me to just make something with what we have, or at least go out and buy the ingredients, but I never do.
Since a big goal for 2019 is saving money, I decided to calculate my spending on Deliveroo, Just Eat, Uber Eats, Pizza Hut and Dominos.
Now for the big reveal! In 2018, here’s what I spent on food delivery:
I suppose it depends on your own personal circumstances to determine whether that is a large sum or not. For me, it’s pretty big! I could have paid for over a month of rent. Or got a new laptop. Or gone on holiday. Or felt more secure in my savings when I was made redundant. Or cleared off around a third of my credit card debt from my immigration fees.
No matter which way you slice the pie (whether it be of the pizza or humble variety), it’s safe to say that I could have spent that money better. I’m not saying I should have had zero takeaway last year. But if it were a treat, rather than a regular occurrence, I bet I would have appreciated it more. Better still, rather than order something online, which is usually delivered in a less-than-optimal eating condition, Katy and I could have made a whole night of it – gone out for dinner, and had a proper experience. I don’t regret a celebratory pizza in our pyjamas or two. But I definitely regret the lunches ordered from Leon when I could have just made myself a sandwich.
Anyway, onward and upward. Now suitably shamed online to my friends and family, I will hopefully make better choices when it comes to purchasing food!
